The Julien De Smedt Architects design team hopes to build a warm, vibrant community around the newly constructed Iceberg apartments in Aarhaus, Demark.

The project, which was completed last year and designed by Copenhagen-based Julien De Smedt Architects, was built in an out-of-use shipping container terminal space with the hopes of bringing a vibrant community to the Aarhaus Harbour area of Denmark.

The plan to develop the waterfront area also includes building workspaces and social areas to bring residents to work, live and play in the new neighborhood.

The design team successfully created mountain-like structures to ensure each unit has a view of the water and optimal amounts of natural light. Providing a breathtaking experience in each and every unit was important to the design team as they hoped to create a highly-coveted housing option on the waterfront.

The development team also wanted to ensure a diverse group of residents would inhabit the community, so one-third of the Iceberg’s units are set aside as affordable housing.
