The scaled-back façade of the West Half Street residential tower, designed by ODA New York for JBG Smith, is made to unite, rather than compete, with the shape and influence of its landmark next-door neighbor—Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.
The building directly overlooks the field, as well as the busy thoroughfare between the Navy Yard metro station and the main ticket gate. Given this exposure, which would be broadcast to over 50 million people throughout the Major League Baseball season, an iconic silhouette was a priority for the ODA New York design team.
The jutting geometric terraces form an echo of the nearby stadium elevation, with the intent of creating a transition space between indoors and outdoors, and the stadium and its surrounding community, according to the architects.
Overall, the building measures 454,000 square feet in size, with residential units ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments. Each unit features curved and minimalist design elements, with high-end stainless steel appliances and floor-to-ceiling windows.
Building amenities include a private terrace lounge at the penthouse level, designed by Venus Williams’ interior design company V Starr, overlooking the Ballpark District; a rooftop pool; a fitness center; a 24-hour concierge; and pockets of green space throughout the property.
West Half Street is one of two ODA-designed properties near Nationals Park. Its sister property, the 1205 Collection, forms a similar terraced exterior next door.
