Q: What trends in products and finishes do you expect to fizzle out in the next year? What new trends do you expect to see?
A: E Walls: White walls are out. Use a more pleasing color, such as whole wheat from Sherwin-Williams, to make the look less institutional and clinical. Warm colors are more relaxing and pleasing to the eye.
- Trim and Millwork: Changing the look of a room can be as simple as updating the trimwork. Trim and millwork are moving to white or just off-white. Also, we’ll see wood baseboards, four to six inches high. Crown molding is dated and out.
- Flooring: Standard vinyl/linoleum is out. The wood look (with a vinyl product) is in.
- Hardware: Both brushed and polished brass are out. Instead, use brushed nickel-type hardware for cabinet/drawer pulls and door handles. Toss out the round doorknobs and use the lever handle instead. They look more expensive (although they’re not), and they are easier for residents to use.
- Lighting: Change the lights. Go with a new look such as brushed nickel type of finishes.
- Outlets and switches: Out with the almond or ivory look and in with the white.
