Student-housing amenity packages have long included private study rooms and local coffee shops as educational aids, but in Chicago-based developer CA Ventures and Boston-based architecture firm Shepley Bulfinch’s 2017 project Rise on Apache in Tempe, Ariz., the team also wanted to provide residents with ways to ease their school-related stress. From swimming and virtual skiing to running and climbing, students living here can engage in a multitude of sports, forms of exercise, and just plain fun.

The 15-story, 384-unit, mixed-use housing complex is located directly across the street from Arizona State University. With a mix of one-, two-, and four-bedroom floor plans, the off-campus accommodations can house more than 800 students. Community amenities are accessible on many of the building’s floors, including the rooftop, whose indoor “sky lounge” houses interactive sports equipment, including ski and golf simulators.

Outside, the sports deck overlooks the street and features a rooftop pool, a regulation-size running track, and multipurpose lawn space for everything from cornhole to bocce. Select areas are covered with fabric shade sails, and a misting system offers relief from the harsh Arizona heat.

Downstairs, the building offers an open-air fitness deck, rock-climbing wall, and yoga room for use 24 hours a day.
